The Washington State Fallen Heroes Project (WAFHP) was established in 2007 by Gold Star Mom, Kim Cole. After the loss of her son Cpl Darrel J Morris, Kim was invited to attend Time of Remembrance, held on Gold Star Families Weekend in the Tri-cities area of Washington. Kim RSVP’d to the event and had a banner made with her son’s picture and information so everyone could remember this amazing man. While in attendance, other Gold Star Family Members came forward and asked her to do the same for their Fallen Heroes. It started with one, then five, and now more than 300 banners in less than 10 years.

The Mission:

To HONOR our fallen heroes, who paid the ultimate sacrifice after answering our nations call. To SUPPORT the families of our fallen heroes for their sacrifice. To EDUCATE our communities about those who gave their all for our freedom. We are forever grateful and committed to their memory.

The Vision:

The mission started out as a forever memorial to those who paid the ultimate price by being carried in parades and displayed at events, now the project is much more to all involved. Today, the vision is straight forward: remembering those who paid the ultimate price and supporting the families who bear this burden. WAFHP wants to make sure that no Gold Star family ever has to bear the cost of remembering their Fallen Hero.

How we operate:

Gold Star families submit a request for a banner in honor of their loved one. The family provides a photo and details, approves the design, and then a banner, magnet, and photo are printed. The Banner is respectfully stored and shared at various events, the magnet is presented to the family, and the photo is affixed to our float. Each volunteer carrying a banner at an event is asked to research and get to know the hero on the banner before carrying that hero. Additionally, each volunteer is required to present that hero with honesty, integrity, honor, respect, and compassion.

WAFHP covers these expenses through various fund-raising efforts to include auctions, raffles, merchandise, and direct donation. Please see the WAFHP Needs page.
